Lepidolite means "scaly stone" after its rose colored gray to lavender gray hexagonal stacks that look like the scales of a dragon. Lepidolite is a type of mica that is composed of aluminum, potassium and lithium. Manganese is responsible for the color of pink, red and purple lepidolites, although many people assume it it the lithium.
Lepidolite was first discovered by Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff in 1861. It is a secondary source of lithium and is mined throughout the world for this purpose. Lepidolite is also an abundant source of other rare earth elements, including cesium and rubidium and thorium. It also is a major component of the aventurine gemstones.
